The Fear of Loss Is A Path To The Dark Side

Millions of fans out there would be familiar with Yoda's famous quotes in the epic Star Wars series. One of these quotes struck an accord with me recently - The Fear of Loss Is A Path To The Dark Side.

In the movie screening, Yoda was having a conversation with Anakin Skywalker and the conversation went like this :

Anakin : I miss her

Yoda : Afraid to lose her I think, mmm?

Anakin : What has that got to do with anything?

Yoda : Everything. Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you.

Taking a pun from Anakin's phrase, "What has that got to do with anything Sales?"

Everything!

Everywhere we go. Every turn we make. We see people who live in fear.

Some knowingly. Other sub-consciously.

The fear of trying something different. The fear of doing something that you have never done before. The fear in transforming digitally. The fear of social prospecting. The fear of cloud adoption. The fear of investing. The fear of losing out but at the same time the fear of change.

Many took the leap of faith to be a part of change. Some played the wait-and-see game. While others shook the notion off and prefer to collect what's left.

Many ask questions or make statements like :

- Why change when things aren't broken?

- This digital transformation bullxxx is a hoax blown big by the media.

- I have been using this training methodology for years and I am comfortable with it.

- Our industry is different. We are not affected by such market changes.

Whether to transform or not to, there is no right or wrong. There are only results. Before you contemplate any changes, we encourage you to think about the below questions :

- Are your customer's buying behavior changing?

- Are you margins eroding over the years despite making the same or more revenue?

- Are you finding it more difficult to attract, hire, retain and manage the younger generations?

- Are you honestly confident that things will remain the way it is today in the next 3 - 5 years?

If you are uncertain about any of the above points, perhaps it is now time for you to consider certain actions to do things differently. Perhaps you should let go of fear, look the situation in the eye and start doing something about. Perhaps you drop fear and walk away from the dark side.

Penning off by taking another famous quote from Yoda, "Do or Do Not. There is no try."
