What Is Your Organization's Super Power?

Have you ever wonder how the different super heroes each have a unique super power that are iconic to them and rarely do you come across 2 with the exact same prowess? Like The Man of Steel (Superman) with his mighty strength, speed and vision. Captain America with his combat skills and power. Ant Man with his intelligence and ability to be micro small. Iron man with his genius and fighting powers, Wolverine with his combat skills and durability. And the list goes on.

Each of them have a unique differentiation to make them stand out from the rest.

So coming back to "planet earth", what is your organisation's unique differentiation? What is that super power that you represent that make you different from the rest of the competition?

I have spoken to many sales professionals and even business owners and many did not really get it. Some quoted after sales support as their differentiator. Others reasoned with the best consultants, service, training facilities and even price, etc... But are these really the "super power" that make you unique?

In today's competitive landscape, it definitely is more difficult to find this unique differentiation. The lines of product and service offerings are becoming blur. Buyers are spoiled for choices with the boom of digital information.

Personally, I see the value of standing out coming from 2 main areas - either the SERVICE or PRODUCT is niche, or the PEOPLE you have are the value creators.

SERVICE OR PRODUCT

I have come across offerings where they are really unique in the industry or region. Perhaps they are the sole distributor, service provider, or perhaps the offering is in its infancy. But it is a matter of time that the sole offering could have a competitor or that the offering becomes a commodity.

I recall the time when the concept of Cloud was a seedling. Cloud partners were less than a handful. But look at the number of service providers who are bred to offer Cloud services and solutions today. It is a world of difference.

PEOPLE

Every single organization, regardless of how unique your offerings, how great the business strategies are, how solid the tools and processes you may have, or how wonderful the culture is, need people to execute, operate and engage. Without people, the organization is just an empty shell full of great things but never blossoms.

However, how often do we see money being pumped into infrastructure, innovation and products and how little was really spent in developing the skills of your people running the organisation.

In people, it is either we pay a lucrative salary to hire a top notch employee, or we pay less to hire someone whom we can train and groom.

I love a saying which I chanced upon on the internet, "Instead of worrying what happens if we train them and they leave, worry about what if you do not train and they stay?".

People, if properly trained, will provide an unforgettable customer experience which amounts to repeatable sales. People, if not properly trained, will provide an unforgettable bad taste which amounts to repeatable bad reviews and lost sales.

So what happens if I really do not know what super power I have?

Here's a quick tip. Take a good sample size of customers and have a conversation with them. Find out what makes them decide to work with you in the first place? What do they see coming from you that made them comfortable in doing business with you.

This is a quick and dirty way to uncover that super power that you aren't aware of.
