Ever watched River Monsters on television or in YouTube? If you have not, catch some of the interesting episodes they have.
What has it gotta to do with business and sales you asked? Bear with me a few more characters more.
If you know fishing a bit or two, you will be able to relate that the location is key to determine the types of fish you want to catch and find, followed by the timing, baits used and techniques employed.
If you have the wrong bait or are fishing in an empty lake, casting more lines won’t help you catch more fish. But, if you cast one line in the right lake with the right bait, you might catch a big fish.
Too often, we have seen organizations casting multiple baits, some even nets, in the same lake, pond, sea etc... in the hopes that one of it will reap results. This is not wrong, but it can be extremely costly, especially when the world is we live in is extremely crowded both physically and digitally.
Now let us take a step back to look at things . . .
IF YOU ARE IN RETAIL OR A RESELLER

Imagine the different types of consumers - kids, teens, working professionals, elderly, rich and middle class etc...These represents the different schools of fishes, of different breeds, shapes and sizes.
Where do we locate our brick and mortar stores or outlets? How should we design and furnish to attract the right crowd? What messages do we utilize to bring in the traffic? How should we brand the image?
Lake / Pond / Sea = Addressable Market
The Fish = Your target customers / consumers
Baits = Your message, your brand
Fishing Rod = Your products, solutions or services
Techniques = Your strategies and message
IF YOU ARE IN DISTRIBUTION / VENDOR

Where does the solution you carry fit in the industry? What kinds of problems do we solve? What type of channel partners do you need?
Lake / Pond / Sea = Target Industry
The Fish =The customers you help
Baits = Your Channel Partner
Fishing Rod = Your products, solutions or services
Techniques = Channel strategy
"If you have the wrong bait or are fishing in an empty lake, casting more lines won’t help you catch more fish."
While we did not attempt to address the Go-To-Market strategies and choosing the correct market or industry in this post, it serves as a reminder to all that casting multiple fishing lines may not be the best route to find your fishes.
If you have opinions regarding today's post, we would love to hear from you.
